Star Wars-ILM Challenge-Vintage Era Ball Droid

Ilm Art Challenge- I decided to go all in on making a droid that was smaller than R2- but still big and clunky- not miniature in any way. How would a gyro ball droid been rigged and filmed, if it was created in the 1970's? What would it do? How do we create that feel while still creating something new and not completely ridiculous.
